DECK REVIEW: The Hip Chick Tarot

I have a fun deck to share with you all! The creator of the Hip Chick Tarot, Maria Strom, reached out to me recently to see if I would be interested in doing a review of her new tarot deck and of course, I said yes! I’ve seen this deck floating around on Instagram and was excited to see it in person! Here’s my review of this inspiring deck!

1537464393146.jpg
eye divider 2.png

The Hip Chick Tarot was created and illustrated by Maria Strom in May 2018, so it’s still a brand new deck! The deck is centered around women empowerment and I love that! My daughter is very interested in this deck and has already called dibs on using it, so I think that goes to say that it’s a deck for all ages. I was quite surprised while going through the cards, they read very well and really paint a clear picture of things!

The illustrations in this deck give me total Keith Haring vibes and that alone makes me happy, I absolutely adore Keith Haring. The artwork is very minimal yet still packs a punch and gives you a full story on each card, leaving lots of room for personal interpretation.

The suits have been changed, as well as some of the names of the Majors and court cards This was done to help the reader connect to the cards on a more modern level and I think they were chosen well:

Create (Wands) - Feel (Cups) - Think (Swords) - Earth (Pentacles)
Queen (King) - Boss (Queen) - Teen (Knight) - Child (Page)

I love the color palette of the cards, it’s soft and bold at the same time with very clean lines. The people in this deck are what I adore the most, so much diversity going on that I will talk about more in this review below. The deck was published through Schiffer Publishing and like most of their decks, it comes well packaged in a nice sturdy box!

A few of my favorite cards

This deck is adorable and made it hard to pull out just a few favorite cards but I picked my top four that truly resonate with me!

Right away, I connected with the Hermit card. I adore the imagery of the person rooted inside the tree, it’s really beautiful symbolism! It reminds you to listen to your natural instincts and to stay rooted in it. I was also drawn to the 8 of Think (8 of Swords) and love this more modernized version of this card of being surrounded by your thoughts and thinking you can’t get out of this. I feel this card deeply, even down to notion of hiding in a hoodie… I thrive in my cardigan when I’m feeling pretty overrun by my negative thinking. It’s like a security blanket for me but I know that if I just take it off, nothing will happen to me yet I can’t see it that way when I’m feeling like this.

The High Priestess… my absolute favorite card in this entire deck, I love it to pieces! The cats peeking at you, the moon rising, how comfortable she looks... Love it!!

Lastly, I really love the Tower card, it’s a more empowering image than we are used to seeing. This person is breaking out of the tower as if they are breaking that “glass ceiling”. Nothing is going to get in their way, they’re unstoppable and finally free. Whatever was holding them back is no longer in the way!

Deck details

Cardstock
I was very pleasantly surprised by the cardstock of this deck, it’s like satin finish that feels really nice! All of the Schiffer published decks in the past that I owned were very glossy, this is a total opposite and I’m thrilled with it! It feels thick but not stiff, it’s a really nice carstock!

Shuffling

This deck shuffles very smoothly and feels great in a rifle shuffle! The cards are thick but have a really nice bend to them that makes shuffling quite fluid and easy. You know how picky I am when it comes to shuffling, this deck totally makes the cut for me! I’ll note that the cards are roughly 4.75” x 3.25” and are just a smidge wider than a standard tarot card, which makes for shuffling easy I think.

1537464419925.jpg

In the package
The deck arrived in a nice, large and sturdy box that houses the book and deck. The big boxes fit nicely on your bookshelf and for sure keep the deck secure while in them. I tend to put my decks in bags when they come in large boxes but that’s just a personal preference. It’s a perfect tarot box set for someone just starting out in tarot or loves to keep a deck and book together.

Diversity
As I mentioned earlier, this deck is diverse! It’s filled with different body shapes and sizes, abilities, ethnicity, skin tones, etc - so many beautiful people grace these cards. Even though the Hip Chick Tarot is themed around women empowerment, I don’t feel like the people in the cards are strictly gendered which I am loving!

Guidebook
This deck comes with a nice 111-page guidebook! I love when decks come with these larger books, it gives you a chance to really get inside the deck creators mindset when they created the deck as well as read their own thoughts on tarot. The book mentions the change of suits and other names as well as info on how to use the cards if you are new to tarot. It also features some great tarot spreads and info about each card. Each card gets a page of info written, this book is really loaded in all the good ways!

Overall
While I think this deck is great for all readers, I think it would be a great deck set for a new tarot reader or even younger readers. The artwork is sweet and bold, gives great readings and is very fluid to read with. The new suit naming makes a lot of sense and is fairly easy to change over.

Reader Interview: Kristen of Over the Moon Academy

I’m so excited to have Kristen of Over the Moon Academy on the blog today! I adore everything she does and her courses are fantastic! One course I always recommend to everyone is her cartomancy course, it’s one of my favorites that I return to time and time again. She is not only a teacher but a divination master in my book who creates unique decks and shares her passion with everyone on social media. Let’s see what she had to say!

eye divider 1.png
kristen.jpg

Hello, can you tell us about yourself? How did tarot find you?

I’m a divination junkie so I love all forms of divination but cards are my favorite. My best friend in high school gave me a tarot deck when I was going off to college. She handed it to me and said, “This seems like something you’d be into.” I had no idea what tarot was at that time. But she was right -- once I opened the box of those mysterious cards, I was hooked. There were quite a few starts and stops with tarot as I learned to navigate the system with little guidance. This was in the late 1980s and there were fewer resources available. Thankfully, I have some fantastic spirit guides who would help me find the right tarot books just when I needed them. I’d go to a bookstore and a tarot book would literally fall off the shelf into my hands.

What is your least favorite card and why?

My least favorite card is on a deck-by-deck basis but it's not the ones you might think. I usually love the "troublesome" cards like The Tower and Death.

What's in your tarot toolbox?

Oracle decks for a final word or reading summary. Playing cards for timing and detailed physical descriptions. I guess I’d have to add my Magical Playbook too since I use it frequently for my reading layouts.

What do you think the Empress would say to the Emperor?

Not much. They’re usually enjoying their roles in different environments and settings in most decks so I don’t think they see each other too often.

What or who inspires you the most?

I’m inspired by creative folks who look at tarot in new ways, whether it’s creating a new deck concept or course or online challenge.

If you could be any court card, which would you choose and why?

I’ve always resonated with the Queen of Wands. She’s very confident and doesn’t seem to care what others think while at the same time she’s very aware of and responsive to her environment. I think of her as the hostest with the mostest!

Deck: Slutist Tarot (photo by Kristina of Red Thread Tarot)

Which deck could you absolutely not live without?

Gosh, that seems to change week to week. I ALWAYS have playing cards and the tarot deck I’ve had the longest is the Tarot of the Ages deck I got about 20 years ago. Right now, I’m really enjoying the Toni LeBusque tarot by Toni LeBusque and I love the straightforward responses from the Power of Surrender Cards (oracle deck) by Judith Orloff.

If you could go back to day one of your tarot journey, what would you do differently?

I would have started learning to read tarot intuitively much earlier instead of force feeding myself all of the book learning first. Don’t get me wrong. The book learning is an absolutely necessary download but I didn’t think about reading tarot intuitively until I got Alexandra Genetti’s Wheel of Change tarot deck in 1997. At that time, I don’t remember anyone using the term “reading tarot intuitively” but that’s what I was doing: looking at the pictures and saying what I saw. Now, I realize it’s beneficial to learn to read tarot in three ways: (1) analytically through book learning (2) symbolically through key symbols and (3) intuitively by saying what you see.

What tarot habits or quirks do you have?

I don’t keep my decks in the flimsy boxes. I always find a nice pouch for them.

If the Hierophant had a favorite curse word, what would it be?

I think he regularly mutters something blasphemous like Goddammit!

Do you think the Hermit prefers decaf or regular coffee?

No coffee. Sleepytime tea. He’s probably sleeping most of the time and working in the dream state.

Lastly, do you have anything you would like to share? News? Event?

I just released my latest oracle deck, Desert Dreamwalk Oracle, and I have new payment plans available for my most popular courses: Make This Magical Playbook and How To Read Oracle Cards.

Weekly Forecast: Sept 17-23

I’m dragging my feet big time and it’s only just Monday, I think my mind just doesn’t want to let go of the weekend, lol! You may notice some slight changes to the website and my shop, I’m working on a few kinks here and there. Trying to do a little revamping, but not too much.

Yes, I missed the weekly forecast last week, sorry everyone! I was just really busy and I couldn’t seem to focus so I decided to not stress out and just let it go for the week and recharge. However, it’s back this week and I’m testing out my Micro Oracle deck!! I’m still editing this deck a little bit more and slowly working on the mini booklet. Hoping to have more news on this deck soon! In the meantime, here is the weekly reading - I’m pairing the Micro Oracle up with the Collective Tarot!

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays

TLDR: Something is not finished, keep at it and the doors will open!

8 of Keys RX + The Magician + #38

Our theme this week is coming from card #38 of my own Micro Oracle deck. It’s letting us know that we have left something behind and we may not have everything we need just yet. I’m really drawn to that star left in the darker aspects of this card, it makes me think there may still be work left to do and we need to get it all done as to not leaving anything behind. This is a great reminder to double check over any to-do lists and be sure you crossed everything off from the weekend, you might have over looked something important that you thought you did!

The other cards for the week really resonate with the message above! The 8 of Keys RX is giving us a heads up that we might not be able to move forward just yet, at least not very quick. The Magician suggests that we need to keep growing our skill and focus if we want to truly move things forward and flip that 8 of Keys upright! Maybe you think you’re ready but in reality you’re almost there, but not quite yet. This is a great time to keep doing practicing, keep studying, and keep building up your base - Whatever it is that you are focused on, keep at it for a little while longer!

When we do get past this block we see in the 8 of Keys, we will be fully prepared to handle whatever comes our way! We can truly manifest the shit out of what we want with the power to back it up! So stay focused my friends and keep your eye on what you have your heart set on.

Weekly Forecast: Sept 3-9

Hello, September! I'm so ready for fall to get here but in Arizona, it doesn't usually feel like fall until Winter is at our feet. We're still riding out the 100º+ degrees right now, at least the humidity is gone finally... it was a very humid summer for us, which you wouldn't think would be a thing being in the desert but we have a lot of monsoons through the summer.

Ok, enough rambling about the weather, let's get to the cards! I'm using the same decks as last week since they paired up so well! The Collective Tarot and Numinous Tarot. I still need to get my review up on the Numinous Tarot, will do that this week!

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays
TLDR: Bring our attention to what is holding you down and dragging you through the mud. It's time to make peace so that you can move forward with an open heart!

3 of Bells + The Hermit + 8 of vials

Last week we had a big "self care" notion, this week I'm getting a sense that we need to pull back a bit for some deeper introspection to help clear out anything we may be holding on to. Things that we keep burying every time they pop up. The Hermit is our theme this week! They look tired yet happy, and oh so out of it. We are being asked to really draw ourselves in a bit and for good reason. It's time work on the things we keep pushing back down to deal with later.

The 3 of Bells asks that we pay attention to what is causing us hurt and ill feelings. We can ignore it all we want but it's not going away anytime soon unless we bring our attention to it like the Hermit asks. We are being asked to really take the time to recover from these things rather than cover it up or they will keep hanging on and holding us back.

How do we do this? The 8 of Vials is reminding us that somethings are just not worth it and we need to learn how to release what is really doing us damage, not just cover it up! Acknowledge the pain and release it away mindfully. We can run from our issues all we want but they will always pop up and find us. It's best to take the time to really work with them rather than bury them further and further down.

I love how both the Hermit and the person in the 8 of Vials are facing the 3 of Bells. It's as if they know what they need to do and are ready to shed light on what is holding us back or what we're still struggling to cope with. The person seen leaving the party in the 8 of Vials makes me think it's time to really give the 3 of Bells our full attention. This is not a long term thing, it's a very short passing so why not clear the clouds now and get it finally over with so you can move forward with a clear headspace and an open heart.

Reader Interview: Amanda from Salt and Shadow Tarot

It's been awhile since I've featured another card reader on the blog and I'm excited to have Amanda from Salt and Shadow Tarot featured this week! She's not only a fantastic card reader but someone I consider a friend who just happens to have amazing taste in tarot decks! She recently launched the Indie Deck Review and I'm proud to be on her team. I'll be sharing much more about the Indie Deck Review soon, until then, let's get to know Amanda a bit more below!

eye divider 1.png

Hello, can you tell us about yourself? How did tarot find you?

When I was fourteen (in 1990), my mom was dying. I used to hide in the bookstore, in the occult section. No one was there and it was quiet. I saved up all the change I could to buy the Classic Tarot by Stuart Kaplan. The first person I read for was my mother. It was terrifying, and mine. I just knew it was mine. I carried that same deck from home to home until 2010 when I found the Shadowscapes deck. I had already been teaching others how to read, and how to find their own path. I have a few more decks now. I didn't discover that there were whole books dedicated to the craft until long after I got that Shadowscapes deck.

I still teach, I still learn, and I am always looking at my cards to inform me. I have a very specific style of reading that I enjoy very much that involves layering decks and energy reading.

If you could remove any card in the deck, which card would it be and why?

Oh! None. Every deck has a card that hits me the wrong way and every deck has a unique voice, but I thrive on it. I've often bought decks because they'll have a single card that makes me super uncomfortable. The Hierophant from the Mary-El, the Strength card from the Clover Tarot. Those are the two that hit me hardest. They are lessons for me. That's what I find most often. The hard cards are lessons I don't particularly want to deal with.

What's in your tarot toolbox?

I carry soap shaped stones with me to 'wash' my hands between readings, and a mug rug thing to put my decks on. Other that my decks, that's all I need. But, I never say no to some nag champa.

What do you think the Empress would say to the Emperor?

Depends on the deck. The Empress in the Prismatic Tarot would ask the Emperor what was on his mind. The Empress in the Sasuraibito deck would ask him why he hasn't joined her. I think the RWS Empress would just say, "Well?"

What or who inspires you the most?

Passionate, kind, human people inspire me the most. People who lift each other up, people who make room at the table for everyone, people who include others, people who fail. Those are the people I look to for inspiration.

I think that people who make the correlation between gentleness and strength are inspirational. And I think mothers that don't eat their young are inspirational. I find my daughters to be inspirational. And dogs. They are the sweetest creatures.

If you could be any court card, which would you choose and why?

I would be the Page of Swords from the Sasuraibito deck. That Page has looked at everything from every possible angle, and I want to look too. But, sometimes, I want to be the Queen of wands from the Prismatic Tarot because that looks like a good time.

Deck: Slutist Tarot (photo by Kristina of Red Thread Tarot)

Which deck could you absolutely not live without?

Um...what? I don't understand the question....
If I had to choose one, I wouldn't even know where to begin. I'd take the one (three) in my purse.

If you could go back to day one of your tarot journey, what would you do differently?

I would look at the other decks on the shelf instead of the one I could afford first. I really wasn't fond of my first deck.

What tarot habits or quirks do you have?

I don't read the books. Even when my friend writes one.
I sometimes whisper on my decks, and I tell them to breathe.

If the Hierophant had a favorite curse word, what would it be?

Fuck.
For Fucks Sake, is the phrase I think of with him.

Do you think the Hermit prefers decaf or regular coffee?

Depends on what he's doing. Decaf before bed is yummy.

Lastly, do you have anything you would like to share? News? Event?

I am building a very neat thing with some of my favorite Tarot Enthusiasts. It's called the Indie Deck Review, and I've found a brilliant team to work with. We'll be talking about all things indie decks. From the decks themselves, to discussions with creators, publishing company reviews, tips and tricks, and a book club. We are all a bit excited, I think.

Weekly Forecast: Aug 27-Sept 2

I missed the weekly reading last week due to being swamped with some side projects, sorry folx! It's back this week and I'm using a new deck that I will be reviewing in a few days, it's the Numinous Tarot by Noel Arthur Heimpel... I'm in love!

If you don't follow me on social media, I have a new newsletter that is launching on September 1st! It's a mini email that contains a "Card of the Month" reading, tarot tips, updates, and more to come! You can sign up for it here

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays
Full Moon in Pisces - Today we are looking at a full moon in Pisces! This moon relates to release in your spiritual path, high emotions, and trusting your intuition.

The Lovers + 5 of Tomes + 4 of Feathers

I'm getting a big giant sign that reads "take care of yourself" in flashing neon lettering! Our theme this week is coming from the 4 of Feathers (4 of Swords) and it's all about retreat and rest so that you can tackle your projects more efficiently. It's hard to put out your best work when you are exhausted and mentally clocked out, take care of your headspace and give it some extra care this week.

Be mindful in how you are spending your time and energy, these are indeed resources that are often looked over. The Lovers is popping up as potential energy this week and this says that we need to be there for others in our community, social circles, and families - this includes yourself! Showing up for yourself is a big one, I mean, how can we help and be there for others if we don't help ourselves. Right? It's like feeding others when you have no food at home for yourself, you need to include yourself in this group.

The 5 of Tomes (5 of Coins) asks that we be resourceful and use what we have on hand, or if absolutely needed, seek out to those who can provide for us. There is no shame in asking for help when you need it, this is also why it's good to keep positive bonds with those around us. We can't always take, take, take... we need to give sometimes as well. If you can though, really try to do this yourself if at possible. Use what you have on hand before having to restock, get creative and get crafty even! You may just surprise yourself at how capable you truly are. Whether this comes to meal planning for the week, supplies for a project, or even just carving out the extra time you need... if there's a will, there's always a way!

Overall, I get a strong sense of self care this week and surrounding yourself with those who support and love you. This reflects the Full Moon in Pisces very well I think! Do what you can and the rest will follow.

DECK REVIEW: The Numinous Tarot

I know I always say this, but I think I've finally found the perfect deck for myself! The Numinous Tarot. This deck has really impressed me way more than I had expected it to! I ordered this deck out of the blue after watching several YouTube reviews and fell in love instantly!

IMG_20180827_105014.jpg
eye divider 2.png

I remember watching this deck come to life when it was being created a few years back. It caught my eye then but I never took the plunge to order it, not sure why I waited so long but I'm glad I have it now. The deck was originally launched on Kickstarter back in July of 2017 but the deck didn't officially come out until early 2018, so it's still a very new deck and one that needs to be talked about more!

The Numinous Tarot was created, illustrated, and written by the talented Noel Arthur Heimpel. This deck is non-binary, queer, diverse and features different body types, race, abilities, and gender identities. In other words, it is simply amazing with a full spectrum! Noel put so much love and focus into creating these cards, I'm in awe of their talent.

Not only is this a brightly colored deck, it's filled with symbols, down to earth imagery, and magic. This deck has combined some of my favorite features that I look for in a deck: cardstock, vibrant colors, gender fluid, and diversity. The more I deepen my tarot practice the more it evolves, over the last year or so I started to remove gender from my readings. This has literally changed my perspective when it comes to reading tarot for not only myself,  but for others and the collective. This deck reflects these changes immensely!

A few of my favorite cards

I recently shared a mini 8 card review on the Indie Deck Review, so I thought I would go into a little more detail here as to why some cards really resonate with me. I'm very drawn to the more shadow like cards, the ones that some would consider darker or more "negative". Despite being a very bright and happy looking deck, there are cards in this deck that really slap you in the face. While gentle, they still carry a big punch!

I absolutely love the Bells (Swords) suit. My two favorite cards from this suit are the 4 of Bells and the 9 of Bells. The 9 of Bells pulls me right in and I can totally relate to how this card feels. When things are rough and stress is high, the volume of it can be really loud and non-stop - a literal feeling of all these thoughts hanging over your head. The 4 of Bells carries a sweet message but is a great reminder to slow down and take care of your headspace by getting some rest. Yes, work is stacked up but you won't be able to function well if you keep overworking, it's time to clock out for a moment and slow your mind.

The Death card in this deck is amazing, you can see the eyes transforming on the face of the person. They are in the middle of a massive metamorphosis moment! Lastly, I treasure the crap out of the 10 of Candles (Wands)! From the colors all the way down to the weight being felt in this card really hits my core. I think many can relate to the feeling this card carries.

Deck details

Cardstock
I wasn't sure what to expect with the cardstock but it didn't let me down at all! I love the feeling of it, the cards do have some gloss to them but it's not overwhelming and I've had no issues with photographing them as you can see. I'm a lover of more thin and bendy cardstock, so this was perfect. Very bendy but durable! I would compare the cardstock to the Cosmos Tarot & Oracle deck set if you're familiar with that set.

Shuffling

These cards are bendy and shuffle like a dream! Like I mentioned above, these cards remind me a lot of the Cosmos Tarot & Oracle deck as far as cardstock goes and it's the same with shuffling. I loved shuffling that deck and love shuffling this just the same!

1534983699823 (1).jpg

In the package
This deck came in a large box, which I think was to make it easier to stock on bookstore shelves, which makes sense. The box also houses the guidebook, which is equally large. I ordered directly from Noel themself and it arrived with a postcard print of the 8 of Candles (8 of Wands), a sticker of the Creator of Vials (Queen of Cups), business card, and the deck/box/guidebook. The box is sturdy as well. Everything was very well made and put together.

The deck does come with an extra card in the Major Arcana, the Numinous. This card reminds me of "awe and wonder" when looking at nature or something that just really moves you. Something bigger than you. It resonates with my pantheist side big time and was a very quick connection for me!

Diversity
If you are looking for a diverse deck, this is it! The Numinous Tarot contains different races, genders, queer, abilities, body sizes, and the list goes on. Noel really did a fantastic job with creating this deck to resonate with people of all spectrums. The 6 of Tomes (6 of Coins) is my absolute favorite card in this deck and it features a person with a body shape like mine, I adore this image!

Guidebook
I wanted to talk about the guidebook simply because it's awesome! I rarely dive into guidebooks unless they have the artists perspective. This entire book was written by Noel themself. It contains their own Fool's Journey story, new spreads, info about the cards that aren't repeated from other books, and is just a really great guide! I love reading Noel's perspectives on the cards after I roll around with my own idea's and thoughts of the cards.

Overall
I think it's pretty obvious, I love this deck! I would highly recommend this deck to anyone and everyone, it's perfect for new readers as well! In fact, if you are interested in tarot and just starting your journey then I would recommend 110% checking out this deck. I promise you that you'll love it!

DECK REVIEW: Dark Days Tarot

Hello, Dark Days! I've been a bit slow at reviewing a few decks that have been in my hands for a bit now, one being the Dark Days Tarot. I received this deck and one other in a trade a little while ago and it's been on my radar for a while now. It's funny how some decks don't really catch your attention until a certain period, this was one of those decks!

1534957876306.jpg
eye divider 2.png

I saw the Dark Days Tarot online many times, but for the longest time it just didn't grab my attention despite it being a gorgeous deck. One day out of the blue, I woke up one morning with this deck on my mind and couldn't stop thinking about it, I shit you not. I came across someone on Instagram a few days later who had several decks up for swap, including the Dark Days Tarot, and we made a trade. The day I held this deck in my hands, it was an instant connection.

The deck was created by Wren McMurdo and the book was written by Emily Mundy. This deck is square and can be read in four different directions - not just upright or reversed like standard decks! While I don't read with reversals, I really like the idea of multiple directions and some of the directions resonate very well for me!

The deck was originally released as a Kickstarter campaign back in late 2016 and the first decks started shipping out in early 2017. I am reviewing the 1st edition, the newest releases have gilded edges and a glossier finish to the cards.

The Dark Days Tarot is an all black & white deck. The Major Arcana cards all have a white background, while the Minor Arcana cards all have black backgrounds. I'm a big fan of black and white decks for some reason, sometimes the color just gets in the way for me.

I've been reading with the Dark Days Tarot for a little while now and also doing a light study of the imagery side by side with the Spolia Tarot and Carnival at the End of the World. The readings I've done with it have been so on point and intuitive... I absolutely adore this deck to pieces! The imagery really speaks to me and plays with my intuition.

A few of my favorite cards

Can I just say all of them?! Ok, I tried to pull out a few of my absolute favorites, ones that really speak to me. Shockingly, the Emperor in this deck has been the only Emperor I have ever loved in any deck I have owned. That speaks volumes here, the Emperor and I do not see eye to eye, ever. I adore the depiction of this Emperor high up on top of their mountain, standing firmly on their land. I love it!

Another favorite card of mine is the 4 of Cups, I adore the depleted energy feel of this card. It just gives off a "I simply do not care" attitude, which is something I resonate well with when this card shows up to the party.

The High Priestess in this deck just gives me all the feels! Their hair looks to contain all the wisdom of generations before them and holds passed down hidden secrets from their ancestors.

Card stock
Love the card stock! It's a bit on the thin side and it's what I prefer best! Maybe I'm an odd duck but I just love thinner cards. It's not glossy like the recent release and I also really like that, it makes it easy to photograph and shuffle. Please note again, I'm reviewing the 1st edition so the newest editions may have a thicker card stock.

Shuffling

Being a square deck, I wasn't sure how it would shuffle but it shuffles really nicely and I love it! It's fun to riffle shuffle this deck and overhand shuffle, it's very smooth. I'm a happy camper with two thumbs up!

1534957612227.jpg

In the package
The packaging of this deck is awesome! It came to me second hand so I don't know if I am missing anything but it feels complete. The deck came with a gorgeous sturdy box that has an actual lid (not a flip top box like most decks), the book, and the cards. The box was designed to have room inside so that you can store crystals and things with your deck, yes please!

The book is great, it's not a typical little white book. It mentions the directions and how you can use this deck, keywords (for all directions) and a little blurb about the card. I like that the book is not filled with standard "cookie cutter" meanings, they're original and I love when books are written in this way. There are also some spreads in the back of the book as well.

Diversity
This deck is diverse and features POC, which I love! In fact one of the most beautiful cards in this deck is the Empress and it's breath taking! My only criticism was that I could only find two cards that show body size diversity, the majority of the deck features thin bodies. I would have loved to see more diverse body sizes, I crave that in all decks.

Overall
I'm totally in love with this deck, it's become a staple in my collection. I have a few decks that never leave my hands no matter what and I can tell that this will be one of those decks. I love how the cards read and tell their own story. The cards are loaded with symbolism that has my detective brain quite happy. I highly recommend this deck!!

Weekly Forecast: August 13-19

A new week is at our feet, it's fresh and I can smell the potential! Today is the Feast of Diana, also known as the Festival of Torches. I'm spending some time today to honor Goddess Diana, she is an archetype I've been working very closely with for the past few months. Today I'm using my main working deck, the Spolia Tarot to tap into what energy may be at play this week for us and what we can do with it!

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays
Mercury RX is finally coming to an at the end of this week on the 19th, hooray! Folx, can you feel the shift already?! I sure can!

FIRE + ACE of Coins

We're playing with fire this week and that resonates with me big time! Fire to me speaks of our ambition, our drive, and our creativity. I've certainly been feeling extra creative, finally. We are asked to control this fire and put it to use!

So how do we work with fire this week? If you're not careful, you can get easily burned out so just keep that in mind! The Ace of Coins urges us to tap into this potential flame and see where it sparks up or illuminates in our life. I feel like the Ace of Coins is the torch handle to our flame, we control where we want it to go. All I know is that since we're working with an Ace card, there's some potential in the cracks of our day to day lives. If something hot lands in our lap, like an opportunity to grow or bring in more money, seize it and use it! Keep fueling this seed with all you have, you want to really put a lot of energy into whatever it is if you want to bring it to fruition. So whether you are starting fresh with a new project, starting a new job, or even just making products for your online shop... give it all you got! Keep that fire in you moving and keep it hot, hot, hot!

New Moon solar eclipse in Leo

Hello, New Moon Solar Eclipse in Leo! Another eclipse is upon us and like most eclipses, they're good at shaking up routines, dragging things into the light, and making you create some drastic changes. This eclipse may bring big changes and fresh starts, I think that is something a lot of us are eager for. I'm ready, are you?

I was in the mood to give the Carnival at the End of the World tarot deck a big test drive outside of daily draws, so I've pulled a card for each astrological sign - not just the elemental groups like last time! I hope these mini tarotscopes bring you some fresh perspectives to work with as we begin a new moon cycle.

DECKS: Moon Oracle + Spirit Speak

There's a lot of Page energy on the table! Honestly, I wasn't surprised at all as this eclipse has been really moving things around for a lot of us and creating the perfect foundation to build anew. Breathe in the new and breathe out the old... clingy... unhelpful things in our life.

ARIESPage of Coins
Keep your focus and your drive by continuing to add new skills and experiences under your belt. These will help set the foundation to future projects and endeavors. Don't worry about getting something wrong, that will get better over time and with practice.

TAURUS - Page of Wands
The solar eclipse may reveal a new path in your life to delve into. Be adventurous and shake off any fear so you can take a closer look. You may stumble upon something that sparks your interest and be worth exploring more.

GEMINIThe Chariot
Create your own personal vehicle to move you forward. You do have what it takes, don't doubt yourself this month. Sometimes just forcing through the blockage is what is needed to get us closer to what we really want. This requires an inner drive that you didn't know you had!

CANCER10 of Swords
Cancer... I know some of you are feeling it pretty hard lately and you may feel this card pretty hard, too. Just remember that whatever is trying to pull you down even more will pass and you will soon feel more and more like yourself once again.

LEO7 of Cups
This makes me think a lot of "buying online vs. buying in store". It's so hard to know for sure if what you ordered is really the right thing until it ends up at our door with some major let downs. It happens to the best of us! Live and let learn, don't let it rain on your parade.

VIRGO - 9 of Wands
Right now, the best advice is to keep your energy up and maintain it for a little while longer. Soon you can put your feet up and really get in some TLC. Just keep the end results in mind to help make this effort worth it when you do reach them!

LIBRA2 of Wands
Let your passion lead you in the direction of where to go or what to do next. What lights your fire? What really gets you excited and amped up? Follow that feeling and see where it takes you! Then you can reassess and see if you would like to keep going or change route.

SCORPIOPage of Swords
The best approach right now is to do what you can in order to get others to listen. If you have something to say or something to add, speak up! Don't let others silence you just because they may think you don't know what your talking about. You don't need their approval, you just need them to understand. Others will take you serious if you show that you are serious.

SAGITTARIUS3 of Cups
I really get a "slow down" feeling from this card despite it usually seen as a happy, joyous event. It's telling you to not wear yourself out trying to be there for everyone else. You need to restore your own emotional needs right now because frankly, I think this eclipse season is draining you. It's time to take care of yourself now.

CAPRICORNAce of Cups
Your cup is full so let it overflow! Fill the hearts of others, say yes to that new date, let yourself feel all the good feels, and don't let others steal your joy! We need this kind of energy right now flowing in the air and through our communities. Don't be afraid to open your heart to others and let them know how much they mean to you.

AQUARIUSThe Moon
Wrap yourself up in some mystery, you don't need to shed light on everything you're doing and working on right now. While yes, it's fun to let the cat out the bag but sometimes we need to keep somethings under lock and key until the right time. go ahead and drop hints, sneak peeks, and even some guessing... but keep your lips shut for a little while longer.

PISCESThe Devil
This is a good warning for you Pisces, watch where you're spending your energy and double check that it's being spent in ways that will feed your soul rather than weigh it down. It can be far too easy to get absorbed into unhealthy behaviors and before you know it, you're addicted to some strange new habit that is far much harder to break than it was to gain..

Any plans for this Moon?
I'd love to hear, leave a comment!

DECK REVIEW: Bianco Nero Tarot

I'm currently backed up on deck reviews but I hope to slowly get them done throughout this month. I decided to do a review of the new Bianco Nero Tarot since it just landed in my lap yesterday and I'm not really seeing much of this deck on social media or in the tarot groups!

1533759614062.jpg
eye divider 2.png

The Bianco Nero Tarot (Black & White Tarot) was created by Marco Proietto of Rome, Italy. Random fact, he graduated from High School the same year I did, in 2001!

What caught my eye about this deck was the mention that it was both inspired by the Visconti Tarot and the Rider Waite Smith imagery. The art is done by hand in black and white ink inspired by antique engravings and woodcuts. I found that really neat!

The artist went to several art academy schools in Italy and studied everything from drawing to sculpture to engraving (both wood and metal). This deck was published by US Games in July 2018, so it's hot off the press.

I don't really buy a lot of mass produced decks these days, I'm very much drawn to indie decks but this was one that caught my attention and for some reason I just had to order it when I saw a coupon code from US Games. Sometimes a deck will just grab you for no rhyme or reason, right?

The card backs are inspired by the 4 elements in the Minor Arcana and features an 8 pointed star symbolizing the Major Arcana in the center, the design is also reversible if you happen to read reversed cards. The deck itself has a very "grim" feel to it, I can't quite put my finger on it but I like it! I'm a massive fan of black and white decks, so it's no surprise as to why I was drawn to the art in this deck.

A few of my favorite cards

There were a lot of cards that I loved and a few that fell kind of flat for me personally, but there will always be some cards like that in any deck I think. My absolute favorites are Death, the Devil, King of Wands, and the Queen of Cups. I adore these!

I really love the Queen of Cups and how siren like she is. You really get a sense of how she feels sitting in that mermaid adorned throne with the wind in her hair and looking out into the water. I'm from San Diego and only lived there up until the age of 6, but we spent a lot of time visiting there while growing up and I really miss the feeling of being at the beach on a windy day. This card really brings that memory back for me.

The other card that caught my eye was Death. Usually the Death card has a more grand depiction, especially in RWS decks. This Death is just very alone and very simple, I like that. It reminds me of a character you would find in the comic book "The Maxx" for some reason, maybe it's the giant scythe that makes me think of that. Either way, I love this card in the deck!

Deck details

Card stock
The card stock is very smooth and "soft", I guess you could say it's typical US Games. It feels nice though, good thickness - not too thick, not too thin. I think they will hold up fairly well! Also, the cards themselves are standard tarot card size.

Shuffling

The deck shuffles smooth and well! I'm a happy camper, but I didn't have any doubts about it's shuffling. There are only a few deck publishers that I really can't stand, US Games is one I like! If I can easily riffle shuffle and over hand shuffle, that's all I need in a deck.

1533759569120.jpg

In the package
Since this was your typical deck, it came with just the box, cards, and a booklet. The booklet is 63-pages and actually has a nice intro written about this deck in general talking about the inspiration for the art, the people in the deck and how their expressions and movement is specific. I was actually pretty impressed with the attention to detail added in this deck!

Overall
The Cons: One thing I really wished for in this deck was diversity! The people in the deck are all very thin and very white, I'm not just saying that because it's a black and white deck either.

The Pros: I really enjoy the art style, the expressions of the bodies really do speak well. All of the cards are very familiar to me which makes it an easy read. I think I will like working with this deck for sure!

5 Ways You Can Connect More to Your Cards

I get asked often "what tips do you have for connecting more with tarot cards?" so I decided to compile my own favorite ways! I'm always looking to dig deeper in my tarot practice, some come by accident even.

eye divider 1.png
1533604578548.jpg
eye divider 2.png

1. Playing Card Cartomancy

While yes, you can read playing cards like tarot cards, but this isn't the cartomancy I'm talking about. I took an online course called "Your Future is in the Cards" taught by Kristen of Over the Moon Oracle Cards. It is basically a how-to for reading playing cards in its own system. Cartomancy has truly changed how I view tarot and how I break down a reading.

By learning how to read playing cards, it really gave me a new layer to look at with my tarot cards. It helped me see card positions differently, ways the court cards interact, and extra little things to look for in a reading like numerical themes. Not to mention, cartomancy is so much fun - it's like being a detective and following the bread crumbs.

2. Doodles

1533222084417.jpg

Another online course I took through Kristen was called "Doodles for Divination". I'm actually wrapping this course up now! This is Kristen's recent course that really packs a punch and has been extremely eye opening! It's like handwriting analysis meets sketchbook. The course has me looking at symbolism and art in a whole new light, especially with indie decks. I've been picking apart the cards in my decks, researching every little nuances I find. It's brought new layers to my cards and has me looking for little symbols everywhere I go. I'm obsessed!

I've always been a huge believer that everything is a sign and everything has a message. This course really confirmed that for me, it's crazy how our mind speaks and shows up to the plate.

3. Exploring

Another thing that can be easily done is just simply explore around your city, backyard, house, anywhere! Pull a card in the morning, not for guidance or anything, but just pull a card and keep it on your mind throughout the day. Look for that card in your day, while you're at the store, sitting in traffic, anywhere. Say that you pulled the 2 of Coins - look for double number two's, twin circles, anything being balance or unbalanced, maybe you found two quarters in your bag, etc. You can look for imagery that reminds you of the card itself and situations you come across. It's a great way to build up your own relationship with the cards that is unique to you.

4. Marseille

IMG_20180805_112614.jpg

Anytime I dive into my Marseille studies, it always adds more depth to my other tarot readings. Marseille has such a neat language it speaks, it's much more fluid than it appears. While yes, numerology plays a big role in Marseille but it's more about how the imagery flows for me. The way the courts are looking and acting towards the other cards. The opening and closing of vines, flowers and swords. Even if you learn just a little about the Marseille system, I really think it will for sure add an extra boost to your RWS deck readings! If anything it will spark some inspiration to work with.

If you like documentaries, I highly recommend watching Tarotology by Enrique Enriquez. It is an absolutely an amazing film! I've watched it at least 4 times already and will watch it again. I also recommend the book "Tarot on Earth" by Tom Benjamin, it's written like a workbook for learning Marseille and it's great fun!

5. Journal Prompting

One thing I love to do, especially when my mind is drawing a blank, is to use tarot cards to prompt my journaling. I'll pull 3-5 cards and write about 1/2 page per card, I do this often with my morning pages where I journal 3 pages each morning and I just can't think of anything else to write. Morning pages are like a brain dump for right after you get up each morning, doing them alone really helps me think more clearly during the day and reducing my stress!

So for example, say the first card I flip over is the 6 of Cups, I'll journal about a good memory or something. Then the next card, say it's the Emperor, I'll write about my dad. Then the next, say it's The Fool, I'll write about an adventure I took... and so on. Doing this really helps me add more personal layers to the card meanings and associations. It gets my mind going and triggers my creative juices.

Well, I hope these spark some interest in you and help add some new layers to your tarot practice! Be sure to let me know in the comments if you try any of these and if that help!

Weekly Reading: August 6-12

Last week I took a small break from the weekly readings. I was pretty distracted and by the time I realized I forgot to post it, we were already well into Wednesday, oop's! It's back this week though and I'm trying out a new deck that I just got yesterday, it's the Dark Days Tarot by Wren McMurdo. I received this deck in a trade along with one other deck, the adorable Marshmallow Marseille. I plan to do a deck review of Dark Days Tarot and the other deck soon!

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays
On the 11th we have a New Moon in Leo. I always get excited when the moon goes dark, it's one of my favorite phases to work with.

Ace of Swords

Your mind sees the potential before the words can even escape your lips. If you're feeling this sudden flash of inspiration, grab it by the roots and take hold! It may help to collect all your idea's and thoughts into one big pile so that you can put things in better order. Anything that makes it easier to understand, especially with Mercury in RX, things have the tendency to get a bit muddy around this time. This also gives you a chance to see what needs more attention or what may be in a more mature state of mind.

I love how on this card there's a hand gathering all the layers of this mountain and forming it into a sword handle. The mountain layers remind me of layers of our subconscious, ones that need to be consciously sorted and put into an order than makes more sense. You're in control with what you do, it's your sword to use.

Wheel of Fortune

When the wheel is spinning, it's time to ask yourself, "do I feel lucky"? Are you ready to take a chance and see what happens? Or, are you going to play it safe and wait this cycle out? The Wheel of Fortune is asking you to take a leap this week and strike while the iron's hot! To me, this card is all about deciding what cycle you thrive in best so that your chances are higher and you end up on top... because that's obviously the most favored outcome, right? When working with fresh inspiration and the sharp clarity from the Ace of Swords, this may be your time to really send some of these idea's you have out into the world and test the waters to see what could possibly happen. It's like throwing the dice and trusting that the numbers are in your favor, sometime you win big... sometimes you lose it all. It really comes down to this, is it worth the opportunity?

With the New Moon coming up later this week, it may be wise to hold off on anything fresh until then! After all, we're working with Ace energy and what better phase to work with than the New Moon!

Weekly Reading: July 23-29

This month is moving quick, I can't believe we're almost into August... which means we're closer to Halloween, my favorite time of the year. This week we have a Full Moon in Aquarius popping up later this week, I'll be posting some mini Tarotscopes for this moon on Thursday so keep a watch for those!

This week I'm using a new deck, Carnival at the End of the World (let's just call this the Carnival tarot from here on out, haha) and if you missed it, I posted a review of this deck here.

I'm short on time today so I'm pulling a quick two-card "to do and not to do" this week, which I find quick effective and frankly I'm not sure why I don't use this little spread more often for weekly guidance! It gets right to the gist of things.

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays

To do - 4 OF COINS

Usually when I see the 4 of Coins show up it tells me that you or someone is being a little too tight, a little too greedy, and a little too attached... however this week, I think that might be the right thing to do! I know for myself, payday isn't until next week so being a bit frugal with my spending is key if I want to make it through till then, perhaps you're in the same boat. Let's try to be a little more careful with our spending and keep a sense of security this week. We don't need to be a greedy jerk about it, just be a little more wise with how and where you spend it. The goal this week is to keep you standing on a firm foundation!

Not to do - KING OF WANDS

The King of Wands this week is urging us to hold back a bit (much like the 4 of Coins) and reserve your energy. I often relate the King of Wands to Dr.  Gregory House on the tv show House. At his best, he's a leader who can figure things out at the last minute, he's driven with pure passion and obsession. At his worst, he's impulsive and blows his lid very easily! Take this into perspective this week to simply not lose your head and try to refrain from jumping right in and taking over, let someone else play commander this week.  Sometimes our ego can fill our heads so much that we overlook others and the situations we are in, next thing we know we're on a boat with no paddle and stuck in hellish waters.

I've been working closely with the Septarian stone lately when it comes to my tarot studies and writing. It's a fantastic stone to work with for communication, public speaking, confidence, and getting the right words out. I find it to be a perfect stone for tarot readers or those who blog, ahem.

DECK REVIEW: Carnival at the End of the World Tarot

Hello, new deck!! I've been waiting for this deck since I first saw it back in October of last year and it's finally in my hands! I had to skip the Kickstarter since I couldn't swing the funds at the time but I finally pre-ordered this deck in February. I've been on the edge of my seat since last month when I saw the decks were starting to ship and seeing images of the cards on Instagram has been killing me since I was trying not to look at the whole deck because I like to be surprised when I go through the deck on my own. It's been hard not to look but I'm glad I waited, some cards were a happy surprise for me to see!

1532117454513.png
eye divider 2.png

This deck was created by two artists, Nicholas Khan and Richard Selesnick, who are both located in New York. Their art style is very captivating to me, it feels like a mix of old carnival and vibes of the 1930's. The images really give you a story within each card and you can pick up subtle theatre vibes, I also absolutely love the clothing and costumes worn by the figures in the cards!

The deck comes with 84 cards. There are 6 extra cards that you can choose to use or not. I'm not entirely sure what I will do with them just yet but I always like to keep a deck together when it comes with extra cards, it just feels like it should be kept as a whole. I was told by Nick, one of the artists of the deck, that the extra cards are not yet mentioned in the book that comes separate, but will in future editions. So it's best to use your intuition with these or give them a set meanings. I will be thinking over these and dissecting the images for sure! Three of them feel very "elemental" but not quite fully (top three in the picture above). The other three are bat themed, but all quite different. I love Madame Lulu in the dress!

The wait for this deck was hard but so worth it as the deck did not disappoint! It's just gorgeous and really feels different than the others being released right now. There is a charm about it that I just can't put my finger on, but it feels like magic. I plan to do a deep dive study with this deck. While some cards for sure have a RWS feel to them, most are entirely their own.

1532125720052.png
eye divider 1.png

A few of my favorite cards

Besides the cards I had shown in the first picture on this post (or all in fact), here are a few others that caught my attention. There is something very rigid and cold about the King of Swords and I love how they were depicted in this deck, made of entirely swords. The cold, hard metal just really captures the spirit of this court card well. Next up is the 3 of Swords, a very fresh depiction of this image that we all know so well. I totally see Baba Yaga vibes in this card and I plan to dive a bit into this area of the card.

I love, love, love the Ace of Wands! You have a beaver cutting away a tree only to make a "pencil" that is breaking out in fire. I love the energy in that card!

I'm always up for a good Devil and this one didn't disappoint, I want to go to whatever party they're hosting! Lastly, I adore the Chariot and their pieced together vehicle. The Chariot to me is always about having fear but not showing it, hiding it out of sight and just pushing forth out of will - I get that feeling in this card. Sometimes you need to do adult things but don't feel like an adult yet, that's me right now at the age of 35.

This deck is loaded with so many tiny details and nudges of folklore wrapped within the artwork. I feel like I'll be noticing new things with each use and that is exciting!

Card stock
Hands down, amazing! If you're a fan of Uusi decks and their card stock... you're in for a treat! I discovered that the creators of this deck use the same card printing company as Uusi, so the card stock is the same as the Pagan Otherworlds tarot and it's truly divine. The Pagan Otherworlds tarot features my favorite card stock to date (though it will be changing in the future, sadly) and I'm thrilled to find it again in this deck. The card stock is, in my opinion, the "Goldie Locks" in the world of card stock... perfect thickness and just the right amount of bend, lush texture and smooth gliding.

Shuffling

It's no surprise that this deck shuffles well, just based on the card stock alone makes it a dream to shuffle. The cards are a great size, they feel pretty standard to me but I haven't measured them up yet, maybe a tad longer than your traditional tarot deck. They fit nice in your hand and it's easy to riffle and overhand shuffle. If you like to spread all your cards on the table and mash them around, you would have fun with this deck as the cards are slippery and move with ease.

In the package
I opted to get just the deck, so mine came with the box and the cards. No booklet or guidebook, but they do have an optional 108-page guidebook available. I will be ordering it soon so I can have an idea of what the artists envisioned. However, since this deck doesn't come with a book it really gives you a chance to get intimate with the cards and develop your own interpretations, which I love! I'll be doing that now until the book is ordered, then I can add more layers into the interpretations.

Diversity
The bodies of the figures in general are all thin, but there is some BIPOC being represented in this deck which makes me happy to see, though there should always be a lot more. Most figures in the deck are wearing costumes and masks. One of my favorite cards in this deck is the Queen of Coins (see first image of post) and it is gorgeous!!

Overall
I think I made it pretty clear, but I'll say it again if not - I love this deck! From the card backs to the card stock to the deck's images... it's very well done and worth the price, though I was able to get the deck at the early bird price - It is currently $50 I believe. I'm thrilled to add this to my rotation of working decks and will be using it often! I look forward to digging deeper into this deck and getting to know the cards better!

Weekly Reading: July 16-22

Hello Monday?! Just like last week, I'm using the Spolia Tarot for the weekly reading! I'm switching things up this week for the reading, are you surprised? I'm using a method that I haven't used in a while, but love! My friend asked about it this morning and it inspired me to use it for the weekly reading. It's perfect for daily, weekly, or even monthly as well... or really anytime! I'll explain it a bit below!

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays

The Hierophant + Ace of Cups + Page of Coins

First off, I don't want to take credit for this method since I learned it a long time ago but have since forgotten where or who I learned it from. It's a really fun way to read the cards!

Starting with the whole deck, you can either separate out the Majors, Minors, and Courts and pull directly from those OR do a simple method of pulling from 3 shuffled stacks, this cuts out the work of separating your deck.

The left stack is for your Major Arcana pull, the middle stack is for the Minor Arcana pull, and the right stack is for the Court card pull. You simply pull a card until you get to the first Major, Minor, and Court.

Example: On the left stack, I kept pulling a card until I get to the first Major card. Then did that again with the middle stack to get to the Minor Arcana card, and the last stack to get the Court card. Hope that makes sense!

Major Arcana - is read as the theme of the week
Minor Arcana - is the action to take
Court - card is the attitude you need to adapt to

The theme this week is coming from The Hierophant and it's all about learning and sticking with the rules, as much as they may suck. Sometimes staying in the lane is what we need, it keeps us focus on what the end result is that we want. While we may not agree or like how something is said or taught, we can customize this later on once we learn it. Right now, it's about soaking up the information!

The Ace of Cups reminds me a lot of our mind this week, we are filling it with awareness and information that we gather from our teachers, our friends, and our family members. Anyone can be a teacher if they have information to share and someone willing to learn. You can gain a lot from others, especially when you just simply listen! It may be something you have heard many times before but perhaps it's the way they explain it that makes it resonate with you better. This is also a good reminder to find teachers that resonate with you, not all teachers are for everyone and that's ok. Fill your cup this week with things that can help you in your life and current path!

The Page of Coins is a perfect mindset to tap into when working with the Hierophant! I always see the Page of Coins as a student, eager to learn and anxious to make progress towards their goals. They are willing to do the work and expand their knowledge. Be the Page of Coins this week when you are wanting to attain more information, learn something new, or work on fine tuning a skill. Be open to everything that can be used as a learning tool with trying new things and don't be put off if something doesn't work out how you wanted - there is a lesson to be learned when we make mistakes! One is always to not do it again so figure out what went wrong and avoid doing that the second time around.

New Moon Solar Eclipse in Cancer

Bringing in the New Moon + Solar Eclipse in Cancer! We are in eclipse season and I was going to just do readings on each Full Moon but I couldn't pass up the New Moon Solar Eclipse! When I was on Patreon, I would share mini Elemental Tarotscope readings on each New and Full Moon. They were really fun for me to do and others found them very helpful in directing their energy and planning out their next cycle.

How this works: I pull 4 cards - one for each element group. Some people tend to favor their Moon sign more than their Sun sign, or some resonate best with their Rising Sign - or all three! It's up to you to decide on which you want to read.

Example: I'm a Sun in Gemini and I resonate deeply with my Sun sign so I'll read the card pulled for Air signs. I'm also a Moon in Scorpio, so I can choose to read the card pulled for the Water signs as well if I like...

I'm using the Cosmos Tarot & Oracle deck for these, I've been meaning to work more with this deck and it feels really good for moon and astro styled readings! If you are familiar with this deck, you will know that it comes as a set and I have chosen to combine mine and tend to read it more like an oracle than tarot exclusively.

DECKS: Moon Oracle + Spirit Speak

The New Moon in Cancer + Solar Eclipse... I'm no expert when it comes to astrology so I stick to the basics of what I do understand and know, however I highly recommend The Tarot Lady for a more in depth look at what's going on in the sky above us! Eclipses bring change and shifts, while Cancer surrounds emotions. This is deemed to be a pretty intense moon and already it's playing out to be just that! This moon is also centered around family and people we are closest to, so be kind to those you love - however, it's a perfect time to do some cord cutting and cutting off bad relationships! If people are causing harm, it will be seen!

EARTH
Taurus - Virgo - Capricorn

Galaxy
Giving back to our communities right now can be very beneficial and is much needed! With that being said, being part of an active community can also be rewarding for yourself, as you can gain a big insight through the eyes of others. Earth signs you are being asked to give back, listen, and cooperate in your community and in your groups. Bring awareness, bring love, and above all, bring respect towards one another. There is so much that can benefit when we are part of a community that is diverse, it builds strength - not just for others but for yourself. Connection with those around you is sometimes what we need to get through the toughest of times, knowing that you are not alone and are also able to be the shoulder for someone else.

AIR
Gemini - Libra - Aquarius

Mars
Hello Air signs, Mars says lets get a move on and push yourself! This is a very active and hands on card. You are being asked to create, get your hands dirty, and make something happen! If you have any doubts, know that you can indeed do hard things! This is perfect timing to take an aggressive approach to getting what you want, but please, don't be a dick about it. You can still tap into your masculinity without it being toxic, we have far too much of that in our waters right now. This energy isn't just about writing down idea's or typing up a rough draft, it's more about the labor involved - heavy research that you may have been avoiding, actually fixing your car so that you can go out and take photographs for a project, taking a class and doing the homework... not just skimming through the highlighted text or watching a YouTube video. It's about really putting in the work to get you closer to your goals, or better yet, reaching those goals - fuck "getting closer" let's aim to hit these goals right now! Put on your armor and dive head first!

FIRE
Aries - Leo - Sagittarius

Saturn
This card is similar to the Death card in tarot, at least it is for me, but it's more than that. It's more than just making some changes, it's about progressing with those said changes. Emerging out stronger, more whole, and more capable than before. In the book, it mentions the child growing stronger than the parent. This is the energy I feel that is tied into this card - really strong growth! But, with changes and progress comes more responsibility. If you are indeed wanting to grow and evolve, know that more power will be handed to you so be sure that you are ready and willing to take that on. You can't just be the boss and expect everyone else to make the decisions for you, it's time to step up and call the shots! If you can believe it, you can achieve it... as cheesy as that sounds, it's true. If you don't think you can handle more tasks or responsibility, admit it and don't fake it. It's ok if you're not ready, but don't pretend that you are. You can indeed still make small changes without going full force, but you can't keep inching that way forever.

WATER
Cancer - Scorpio - Pisces

The Sun - Scorpius
The Sun in general has been showing up a lot lately, both in person (hello, Arizona sun beating on my door) and in the cards. It speaks of intense passion that is guided by clarity, one that we can see for certain is there. In this card I see risks being taken, led by ambition and fearlessness. This card is tightly tied to Scorpio, which is funny to see it show up here as Scorpio is indeed a Water sign. Whether you are led by deep emotions or just eagerness to get involved, check in with yourself to see if you are led out of spite or out of good intent. It's too easy to let emotions get to the best of us, often times we are fueled to help others or are affected through the acts of others, but it's best not to react when these situations pop up. These conditions can get heated quickly and escalade in a direction that you may have not wanted or prepared for. It's best to use your energy for more favorable conditions rather than harm, let the Eclipse shine the light on those who are hiding in the shadows.

Any plans for this Moon? I'd love to hear, leave a comment!

Deck Share: My Playing Card Collection

1531229296115.jpg

When I started getting into cartomancy with playing cards, I was asked the same question over and over again - What is your favorite playing card deck? It's about time that I do a little "deck share" on the blog with them! I only have 4 playing card decks in my collection right now, I'm not sure if I'll be adding more as time goes on or not, but I do have a few others still on my wishlist. I thought for sure my deck collection would explode but I found out that I am very more picky with my playing cards than tarot, who would have thought?!

eye divider 2.png

First, I thought I would mention how I learned cartomancy. I took a course taught by Kristen of Over the Moon Oracle Cards called Your Future is in the Cards and it was excellent! I was told it's good to find a system and stick with it, there are many systems out there with slight variations so it's key to find one that is comfortable for you and makes sense. I decided to stick with the system she taught since it was what I learned first and really made a lot of sense - also, there was so much info and print outs that I filled a 1.5 inch binder, that is now my go-to book! I recommend Kristen's course highly, she is an excellent teacher!

Also, did you know you can read playing cards like tarot cards? A few of my friends started their tarot practice this way and after I learned cartomancy I decided to check it out for fun. I found that It's a great way to get to know the numerology involved in tarot and takes away the distraction. If there is any interest, I may do a small post on explaining how this is done.

Ok, let's show you my decks! I'm going to start with the first deck I owned and go up from there.

Pagan (Blue Limited Edition) by Uusi

1531229219581.jpg

This was the first playing card deck that I had, while yes I have had many standard Bicycle decks over the years, this one was more "fancy" so I never used it. I received this deck in a swap when I traded for the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot. I didn't know it was coming along for the ride until the package showed up and I was quite pleased but didn't know what to do with it but I knew that I didn't want to use it for card games, so it sat on my shelf for over a year.

In the end, this was the deck that I studied and learned on, it's often my go-to deck when I do cartomancy readings. I've put a lot of energy into this deck and it reads very well for me. This is perfect for starting out with cartomancy, it's follows your standard playing card set up.

Hotcakes (Red Edition) by Uusi

1531229250406.jpg

Another Uusi deck! What can I say, I love their card stock and designs. Each deck that Uusi creates is painted card by card so even the pip cards (numbered cards) are hand illustrated and vary slightly - I love this and this is one reason I keep coming back to Uusi decks! This was my first intentional cartomancy purchase, I ordered this deck after I got my certificate of completion with the course and it's one I had my eye on for awhile but didn't know what I would do with it until I learned cartomancy.

This is a cheeky deck and it carries an erotic theme spread through the face cards, I think it was quite tasteful in how they presented the illustrations. I really enjoy working with this deck! This is another deck that I find perfect for starting out, it also follows the standard playing card set up.

Into the Weird by Gebhardt

1531229167883.jpg

My third deck to collect was the Into the Weird deck and I love how quirky it is! This is the first deck I bought that strayed away from the standard system of the design. This deck features a different illustration or scene on each card, making it a great playing card + oracle mix. I love to read the cards first as I normally do, then I go back and add a layer of oracle meaning based on the card illustrations. I get a really great, in depth reading this way and it's a fun way to use more of your intuition in the cards rather than follow the system direct.

Little Deck of Horrors by the Ellusionist

1531229190397.jpg

Lastly, one of my absolute favorite decks I own is the Little Deck of Horrors! The second I got into cartomancy this deck started popping up on my Instagram feed with sneak peeks and they were killing me. I'm a "Halloween everyday" type of person and the design of this deck really resonated well with me. Hard to see from the pictures but all of the cards are illustrated in a rough/air brush style design. I love everything about this deck all the way down to the box, which is a side opening style rather than top. While my first deck is always going to be my favorite, this deck comes in right behind that.

One thing I'll note is that the system I use for cartomancy works with directional face cards (court cards). That means, that the direction the face card is looking plays a huge importance in the reading itself. For example: if one or two face cards show up in a 3-card reading I pay attention to how they interact with one another or if there is just one face card I look to see what card that face card is looking at. The reason I mention this is because I had to pin dot mark my face cards in this deck as they don't show direction (facing left or right). However, I didn't let that stop me from buying this deck!

Weekly Reading: July 9-15

Happy, Monday! This weekend went fast.... at least for me! I didn't do a whole lot outside of the house since it was way too hot. I think we peaked at 115º yesterday but today it's supposed to be a bit "cooler" at around 110º.... we are also currently in monsoon season finally, so while Arizona is usually a "dry heat" it's hot and humid right now.

FYI: My response to the comment "but it's a dry heat" that us Arizona folx hear all the time is that your oven is also a dry heat. Unless you enjoy sticking your head in the oven for shits and giggles, it's still damn hot, haha!

Ok, a new week means new possibilities! I'm using the Spolia Tarot once again, I can't get enough of this deck. Both the booklet and cards are just.... amazing! If you missed it, I shared a review of this deck that can be read here.

eye divider 1.png
Deck: Mystic Mondays

6 of Wands + 10 of Swords

Energy from the 6 of Wands tells us that no matter what you face this week, be vigilant! Set yourself up for success and don't shy away from being praised, even if it's just for helping someone out at office at the printer. Take that compliment and run with it! Use it as some extra fuel to keep you going and doing a good job! Who doesn't likes a good pat on the back from time to time, am I right? Perhaps you may be getting some appreciation for work done around the house... you know, the whole "wow, the house looks great" even though it's been clean for a few days, just take it and smile. When we know we are doing well, it helps us to keep up the momentum and do better if not for others, at least yourself. I know that when I'm told that a blog post I wrote was very helpful or that a reading I gave was empowering for them, it makes me want to keep doing what I do. Especially when you had doubt before, it lets you know that you're on the right path and that you can indeed do hard things - even if they aren't all that hard, you know you are making a difference in either your life or others.

Advice from the 10 of Swords... Ouch! This may sting a bit but it's a great wake up call! While no one likes to see the 10 of Swords pop up in a reading, I do like to see it show up for advice - I tend to see it as a warning more than anything, and who doesn't like a good warning?! Since we're working with the energy of the 6 of Swords and being praised here and there, don't let that be an invitation to go all out and overboard! HINT: It's not going to play out well. Often times when we keep getting the "good job, buddy" we tend to let it go to our head more and more, then we think we are invisible and can "probably handle this too"... jury says, we can still see you and you need to stay in your lane! This is just setting you up for a hard landing, so stay grounded and be practical in your thinking and logic. Don't overdo it just because you think you're untouchable, you may have done well in other things but it's not a ticket of freedom to do whatever the hell you want just because you think nothing could go wrong.

If you do find yourself in the position of the 10 of Swords this week and things do indeed backfire, just dust yourself off. It's ok, at least take this as a learning experience to not do it again. Right?
